Honor Flight October 2013

Thirty one Veterans (pictured above)  from  World War II, the Korea Conflict and two from the  Vietnam era joined the Honor Fflight Family in October 2013. Though a challenge with the government shutdown happening only three days before, the tour was a huge success. After moving some barricades on October 8th, the veterans were able to visit all of the memorials that were built to pay tribute to the many sacrifices they endured. Also, for the first time, the Veterans were able to visit the tomb of the Unknown Soldier where they witnessed the Changing of the Guard. Currently over 264 Veterans wear the Honor Flight yellow jacket thanks to the generosity of a very grateful community.

Honor Flight of Southern New Mexico was established in 2008 by business and community leaders who were devoted to honoring our Veterans.  October 2014  will mark our seventh flight back to Washington DC allowing Veterans the opportunity to see their memorial. In the past our focus has been on honoring the WWII Veterans, our most senior heroes also known as  THE GREATEST GENERATION.

In the first six years of the program, 228 WWII veterans have been honored as a direct result of the generosity of the community. In 2012, applications from the Korea conflict veterans were accepted and 18 joined the group that year; 14 more made the trip in 2013. Additionally, 2 terminally ill Vietnam veterans also joined the 2013 group bringing the total veterans that Southern New Mexico has honored to 264.

2014 brings another important change. We would like to officially welcome all Veterans from El Paso, Texas to the Honor Flight of So. New Mexico program. There was not a Honor Flight hub in the El Paso community, and with their close proximity to the hub in Southern New Mexico, merging only made sense. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE FOR ALL OF OUR VETERANS, no matter where they live. It is all about the Veterans and getting them back to Washington D.C. to visit the memorials that their bravery inspired.

The next Honor Flight tour is scheduled for October 6 - 8, 2014.   Our main focus at this time is understandably still on our most senior heroes. As a result, we are currently accepting applications from both World War II and Korean Veterans. Vietnam veterans at this point are placed on a waiting list and will be accepted as space and funding permits. It is important to note though that any veteran from any conflict that is considered terminally ill will be moved to the top of list if his or her personal physician approves the travel. Please join us in honoring our Veterans by helping us send them to Washington, D.C..... where they will experience firsthand the memorials that are dedicated to them for their service to our country.   We like to think of it as ONE MORE TOUR WITH HONOR.

This is a special event honoring the men and women who served our country ensuring the many freedoms that all of us Americans enjoy today. It will be a day of recognition and tribute for the Veterans' service and sacrifices.

The “ADOPT A VETERAN”program was started in 2012 and has enjoyed enthusiastic support with the community adopting 26 Veterans that first year and 26 more in 2013.The adoption fee is $1,000 and covers most of the Veterans expenses.Individuals or organizations that adopt a veteran will be listed in our banquet program and will be invited to the annual veteran reunion where they will be presented a plaque commemorating the donation.Onemay also"ADOPT-A-VETERAN"      in memory of  ........  or in honor of  someone special.     This dedication will be inscribed on your plaque.

Please note though that it is not necessary to “ADOPT-A-VETERAN” to make this trip a reality for a Veteran; donations of lesser amounts are also appreciated.Any monetary contribution will help. The number of veterans we can accommodate each year is totally dependent on the funds we raise.
